2009 Walk MS Job Descriptions
Before the Event:
-
Walk MS Committee: Take the extra step...and join the Walk MS Planning committee. Volunteering with Walk MS and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society can include more than just a one-day commitment. If you are passionate about a cure for MS and willing to learn and work with others, the Blue Ridge Chapter can use your ideas, commitment, organization and creativity on a planning committee. As a committee member, you’ll meet new friends, meet new walkers or volunteers like yourself, help make a difference at your walk site and help create a great event. This is your chance to use your ideas and suggestions and actively make change happen. In addition, you can still walk and raise money in the fight against multiple sclerosis. If you are interested, please email camille.weaver@nmss.org today! Recruit a team: From your place of work, neighborhood or place of worship you don’t have to walk to organize a team! - Brochure Distribution: Volunteers are needed to help deliver brochures about Walk MS to area businesses. First chance to help with brochure distribution is mid-January. The second chance comes up in late February.
- Phone Calling: Volunteers are needed to help with phone calling before Walk MS to call last year's walkers. This can be done from our office or your home. February through April, days or evenings.
The Day of the Event:
- Greeters: Greet walkers as they arrive and direct them to locations. This position is important; it is the first impression many people have of Walk MS.
- Registration: Register walkers, collect waivers, hand out walker numbers and distribute T-shirts. Training is available prior to the event.
- MS Information: Provide information to walkers and friends and family and hold onto lost and found items. On-site staff can provide assistance with questions.
- Volunteer Tent: Check in registered volunteers and distribute volunteer assignments and t-shirts.
- Traffic Control: Hang directional signs, direct cars to parking spaces, direct walkers and volunteers to start site, answer questions.
- Start Site Set-Up Crew: Help set up tents, tables, chairs, banners etc.
- Lunch Set-up: Set up tables and chairs for lunch. Assist vendors with set-up and serving if needed. Keep area free of trash.
- Route Set-Up: Help set up the Walk MS route, place cones and signs, help with rest stops, and assist as needed.
- Course Marshals: Help to assure walkers stay on the designated route by standing at turns and intersections and providing direction.
- Make your Mark Against MS Wall: Assist walkers and volunteers with making their Mark Against MS and with leaving messages of hope for friends, families, etc.
- Rest Stop Attendants: Prepare the rest stop before walkers arrive; ice down refreshments and cut fruit/snacks. During the Walk, hand refreshments to walkers. Take down and clean up the rest stop once the route closes.
- SAG (support and gear): Drivers are needed to provide walkers with transportation back to the Start Site if necessary.
- Cheerleaders @ the Finish Line: Cheer walkers as they cross the Finish Line. Please bring any items you wish, such as noisemakers, signs and pom-poms.
- Start Site Break-Down Crew: Take down tents, tables, chairs and banners, and pick up trash.
Massage therapists, HAM Radio Operators, photographers and medical volunteers are also needed…share your skills to help make Walk MS a memorable experience for all!
Interested? Please select Volunteer on the online registration form. You’ll be called or e-mailed with possible shift times and details.
Volunteers are fundraisers, too! While not required, volunteers often want to do more than help at the event or work on a planning committee -- they want to raise money to help bring an end to MS. You will receive the same fundraising tools our walkers enjoy! That includes all tools available on the website, receive information in your mailbox about the event and have access to your online Participant Center. And when you fundraise as a volunteer, you will be eligible to win the same great prizes available to walkers! You can login to your Participant Center with the username and password you created when you registered. Create your own personal web page with photos and your story about your connection to multiple sclerosis and Walk MS. You can send emails to family and friends asking them to donate or volunteer with you, send thank you notes, track your fundraising progress and enter gifts received offline. Join the movement and become a fundraising volunteer today!
